Jurassic Park clip:
The purpose of the sound in this clip is to entertain the audience and make the audience feel excited. The now iconic music tells the audience how to feel about the new landscape and enhances the visuals. Without the sound the clip becomes more dull and unentertaining.
Film- Evil Dead Rise Vinyl Possession
Sound is important in this clip as this is the pivotal moment where the horror of the movie begins. The type of sound is dialogue/speech but also uses distortion effects to create the horror of the sound. The sound is used in this clip to create and raise tension. As the tension rises during the possession, the voice on the vinyl becomes louder and more inhumane. This is to entertain the audience and put them on the edge of their seat, reinforcing the genre and delivering on the visceral pleasures they are watching to experience.
This clip uses the soundscape (in order) of:
- A sting at the start of the clip
- The turn table hitting the vinyl
- The voice on the recording talking about his findings.
- The pages of the book start to flap by themselves
- The bell of the elevator and the squeaking doors sliding open.
- The voice gets louder and feels as if its left the speakers
- The character, Danny, starts to breathe heavily
The sound then pauses for the audience to catch their breath for a brief second, before everything descends into chaos. This is the point where all the audio starts to rapidly build on one another.
- The roaring of the demon as it rapidly approaches the building.
- The music starts to build up
- The electric spark as the vinyl continues playing
- The woman, Ellie, screaming
- The Clothes flying around
- The sound of the floors passing by
The clips audio starts off with minimal noise and slowly builds up with the different layers of audio getting more and more intense/distorted. This is to connote the chaos the characters quickly descend into and can't go back from. The soundscape creates tension and is the key part in creating the horror of the scene as all the audio makes the audience feel like they are in the scene with the characters as their world falls apart.
Tv Show- Yellowjackets
In the final episode of the season, beloved character Natalie is accidentally killed by her friend, in the moments before death she sees herself back in the plane that crashed with her and her friends during their teen years, where she always believed she should have died and spare herself of the trauma she experienced to survive. The scene uses a wild track of a plane intercom noise to introduce the scene and make the audience immediately familiar with the new setting and environment. It also works to break up the sounds of the crying and distress from her friends so that the sound could transition to a more muffled background noise more naturally as the music begins to rise.
Computer Games- The Last Of Us
The Last of Us video game uses sound design to bring their zombies to life. The games genre is action with horror elements. The creatures in the game called the 'clickers' are fierce and formidable enemies that the player is supposed to feel scared of, so the sound design needs to instil a sense of terror in the player as this is an exception for the genre of the game. The creatures are horribly disfigured and barley human, so the sound design reflects this with painful shrieking and clicking noises. In gameplay, the slow clicking noise adds tension as it makes the players aware of the ever present threat looming around every corner and puts the player on the edge of their seat. The soundscaping for scenes/levels featuring the clickers is very important as the design of the creatures is that they hunt the player based on the sound they make and not sight, so every tiny noise made by the player during those levels strike fear, and makes them scared of hearing any sound.
Advertisements- "The Pitch" Toyota Commercial
The purpose of this advert was to sell a product. This AD uses added wild tracks of tires screeching layered up with the engine revving during its racing segments. This is to add tension for the Ad and excites the audience, as the verisimilitude makes you feel as if you're in the action. It's also makes the car seem advanced and like a real racing car, selling the product to the audience as they'd like to feel as if they can own a racing car.
